Linux Air Combat Version 7.92 released Oct2019

LINUX Air Combat's first official "Production Release" is now available, after more than four years of intense development and testing. In terms of features and technology, this is now the world's leading open-source combat flight simulator. During our four-year development period, we published numerous updates as new features were added and as bugs were fixed.

We expect this new "LAC R7.92" official release version to remain stable and unchanged for at least a year while we gather user input from the growing online player community.

The download archive available in itch.io includes full source code in "c++",  accompanied by all associated image, texture, and sound file resources and a "makefile" according to well-established norms within the LINUX community. Certain free, well-known prerequisites are required as follows:

Prerequisites for running a compiled, binary version of LINUX AIR COMBAT

  • libfreeglut3
  • libSDL1.2_0
  • libSDL_mixer1.2_0
  • libmesaglu1
  • libmesa

Additional Prerequisites for compiling your own version from the LINUX AIR COMBAT source code

If your LINUX system is typical, you will need to compile LINUX AIR COMBAT from the free source code (the well-organized source code makes this very easy, even for non-programmers). In addition to the prerequisites listed above, you will also need gcc (almost always present),  and all of these tools and libraries, which are generally NOT preinstalled in most major LINUX desktop distributions:

  • gcc-c++
  • Code::Blocks (recommended, but not required)
  • Libfreeglut-devel
  • libSDL-devel (for SDL version 1.2)
  • libSDL_mixer-devel (also for SDL version 1.2)

Later, better, and more stable versions of LAC have been published since this article came out back in Nov2019.  Since Nov2021 it is no longer necessary to compile LAC because a precompiled "AppImage" version is now available that includes all prerequisites for 64-bit X86 hardware. It works in all of the leading desktop LINUX distros. You can always find the latest, greatest version of LAC here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxaircombat/files/

As you explore that link you'll find versions with source code that you can compile in addition to precompiled versions. You'll also find versions for the Raspberry Pi on the "Raspbian" operating system in addition to the more mainstream LINUX distros.

Take a look at this video clip to get a good idea of what it's like to fly in LAC's online arenas when nobody else is participating:
